After the Civil War ended, Lincoln put into motion reconstruction. Reconstruction was a period where the Union was going to allow southern states to be readmitted into the Union. Evidently the southern states were eventually readmitted, but there was a lot of mending to be done. After total war had been introduced, the North absolutely destroyed the southern states. Lincoln knew something had to be done, so he had Union soldiers go to the south and begin to rebuild and help southerns. And so began reconstruction. Reconstruction went fairly well, considering that they obviously readmitted southern states successfully. Not to mention the amendments that were passed. The thirteenth amendment, fourteenth, and fifteenth. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery in the United States. The fourteenth guaranteed equal right to all citizens of America, although this amendment was ignored for a long while. The fifteenth amendment gave everyone the right to vote, but once again, people found ways to make sure African Americans were not able to vote. The compromise of 1877, when the Republicans decided that they weren't getting anywhere with equal rights for African Americans. President Hayes removed the last troops from the southern states, ending reconstruction. After reconstruction Jim Crow laws were set into place. Which lasted for many years, ending after the Civil Rights movement. Jim Crow laws were a direct effect of reconstruction, making reconstruction a indirect cause of the Civil Rights movement.
